A 1960s weatherboard home near Queens Park in Highton was showing extensive peeling, fading and timber deterioration after two previous exterior painting projects.
The homeowner wanted more than another coat of paint. Previous work had started failing within a few years, so we inspected the exterior to identify why the coatings were breaking down.
Our assessment found extensive paint build-up, failed adhesion around weatherboard edges, chalking on the north-facing elevation and two areas of timber decay.

Margaret had lived in the property for more than 20 years and had previously had the exterior painted twice.
By 2025, the paint was peeling along several weatherboard edges, particularly on the north and west-facing elevations. Some sections had deteriorated back to bare timber.
There were also areas of soft timber near the laundry window and signs of moisture-related staining around the pergola.
Rather than simply painting over the existing coating, we carried out a detailed inspection to determine what was causing the repeated failure.
The inspection identified several issues that needed to be addressed before repainting.
We explained to the homeowner that another simple repaint would not address the underlying problems.

A period of rain interrupted exterior work during the project. Rather than applying coatings in unsuitable conditions simply to maintain the original schedule, we adjusted the sequence and continued preparation work where possible. Exterior coating application resumed when conditions were suitable.
The existing 1960s weatherboards had a non-standard profile. We sourced a close match from a Geelong timber supplier and prepared the replacement boards before installation.
The property remained occupied during the project. We coordinated the daily schedule with the homeowner and maintained clear communication throughout the work.
During preparation, an additional area of soft timber was discovered behind a downpipe. We photographed the issue, discussed it with the homeowner and obtained approval before completing the additional repair.
Primer was applied to bare and stripped timber to provide an appropriate base for the exterior topcoat system.
Dulux Weathershield was selected for the exterior finish based on the property's substrate, exposure and required finish. The coating system was applied according to the relevant product requirements and prepared surfaces.
The biggest improvement wasn’t simply the new colour.
The project addressed the preparation and substrate problems that had contributed to the previous coating failures.
The two deteriorated boards were replaced, affected surfaces were properly prepared, relevant joints were sealed and exposed timber was primed before the final coating system was applied.
The finished exterior now has a cleaner appearance and a properly prepared base for ongoing maintenance.
